What Is Parish Nursing?

Parish Nursing is not the invasive hands on nursing care we are all accustomed to doing or receiving.

  • Provides wholistic health ministry for parishioners,
  • Support/encouragement to changing life styles,
  • Nurses have high regard for how we look at life in relation to our creator,
  • Caring for people's needs,
  • A bridge between science and religion.
There are 5 basic concepts to the role of a Parish Nurse:

There are 5 basic concepts to the role of a Parish Nurse:

1. Health Educator
Organizes seminars, workshops and discussions on a wide range of health and wellness subjects.

2. Personal Health Counselor
Blood pressure screenings,
Glucose screenings,
Health History forms,
Advisor on access to complex health care system.

3. Facilitator and Organizer
Develop teaching programs,
Volunteer coordinator,
Organizer of support groups.

4. Referral Source
Community liaison,
Contact to health care providers/translator/interpreters.

5. Friend & Good listener
Someone who understands that health is more than just a physical matter.
